Ze zijn arm in materie maar rijk in verbeelding.
Ze zijn bescheiden in woorden maar groots in moed.
Ze zijn stil in hun lijden maar luid in inspiratie.
De Zapatista’s zijn een boerenorganisatie van Maya indianen in Chiapas, Mexico. In 1994 kwamen zij in opstand toen “de vrije markt” hun bestaan bedreigde.
Ze inspireerden duizenden wereldwijd met de leus “een andere wereld is mogelijk ”. Hun leefgemeenschappen weerspiegelen deze verbeelding. De Zapatista’s organiseren zichzelf volgens hun eigen principes. Gelijkwaardigheid, solidariteit en wederzijdse hulp zijn de lijdraad voor hun dagelijks leven. Ze zijn zelfvoorzienend in voedselproductie, onderwijs en gezondheidszorg. Ze zijn onafhankelijk van de Mexicaanse regering, die hen terroriseert sinds de dag dat ze Basta! riepen.
Afgelopen 2 mei bereikte het geweld tegen de Zapatista’s een nieuw dieptepunt. Leraar Galeano van een Zapatista school werd op brute wijze vermoord en tientallen dorpsgenoten raakten zwaar gewond. Zonder luide, internationale verontwaardiging is dit een vrijbrief voor meer geweld.
Wij laten de Zapatista’s weten dat ze niet alleen staan.
Wij geloven dat er zich in iedereen een Zapatista schuilhoudt.
Ook hier in Utrecht zijn Zapatista’s.
Ook wij geloven dat een andere wereld mogelijk is.

Saturday afternoon KSU will look for Zapatista’s in Utrecht. We want to show our solidarity with the Zapatista’s and awaken the hidden Zapatista in our fellow Utrechters. Come join us, and share your latest Zapatista deed on the Wall of Solidarity!
The Zapatista’s are an organization of indigenous Maya campesinos in Chiapas, Mexico. In 1994 they rebelled when the “free market” threathened their existence. Their act of rebellion convinced thousands worldwide of the idea that “another world is posible”. Their communities show it is not mere imagination. The Zapatista’s organize their communities according to the principles of equality, solidarity and mutual aid and they are selfsufficient in foodproduction, healthcare and education. They are independent from the Mexican government, who has repressed them ever since they collectively shouted Basta!
Last 2th of May, repression reached its peak when the community La Realidad was attacked and Galeano, a teacher of one of the Zapatista schools, was murdered and dozens of villagers were seriously injured. Without loud, international outrage, this will be an recipe for more violence.
We want to show the Zapatista’s that they are not alone. That also in Utrecht, there are Zapatista’s.
We also believe that another world is possible.
