Inqueersections

Inqueersections

This three-day festival invites to explore different queer activist struggles and strategies, and to think about what kind of alliances can be built around them.

The festival is based on an idea that queer struggles and experiences always have to be seen not only as related to sexuality, oppression based on sexual orientation and gender, but also to other categories, such as race, class, ethnic background etc. that affect queer lives. In their own turn, these categories mark the lives of people that do not necessarily identify as or affiliate with the notion of queerness.

Inqueersections is indebted to Black feminism and queer studies, and relies on concepts developed in these fields. One of them is intersectionality – a notion that was first articulated by the Black feminist legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw and has since then been taken up in various contexts and used as a tool of thinking about a wide range of different sources of oppression and their interaction. This festival wants to ask if and how intersecting oppressions can also create a basis for unexpected alliances, complex dialogue and possibilities to share knowledge and strategies of queer activism in and across different contexts.

The festival is also built on the idea that cultural and geographical context in which queer activism is done shape how queerness is understood and what kind of forms queer activism takes. How do queers employ different activist strategies and how do they negotiate with different national contexts? How is queer activism part of other struggles that these activists engage in?

We invite people, groups and collectives from across different national, geographical and cultural contexts to enter into a dialogue, share knowledge and learn from each others struggles. During the three days of workshops, discussions, film screenings, performances and shows we encourage participants to work through the multiple axes of inequality that crisscross in queer lives and to lay grounds for alliances between different communities.
