Van 15 t/m 17 november organiseert de Balie het Global Uprisings event, waar diverse sprekers het hebben over: “The Stories, Ideas and Future of Uprisings around the World”.
Een aantal studenten uit Quebec die op het evenement zullen spreken over de massale studentenstaking van 2012, willen ook de KSAvond bezoeken om voor de Amsterdamse studenten een Q&A te geven!
In 2012 gingen honderdduizenden mensen in Quebec de straat op tegen een verhoging van de collegegelden. Op het hoogtepunt staakten 150.000 studenten en kregen ze massale bijvang van de rest van de bevolking toen de regering hardhandig optrad tegen de protesten. Uiteindelijk viel de regionale regering en kwam er niks terecht van de collegegeld verhoging.
Het hoger onderwijs in Nederland wordt al jaren gekenmerkt door bezuinigingen. Colleges worden steeds massaler en de universiteit wordt steeds meer een diplomafabriek. Toch is er amper een tegenreactie vanuit studenten. In 2011 waren er nog zo’n 15.000 studenten op de been om te protesteren tegen oa. de langstudeerboete, maar dit heeft een nieuwe golf van bezuinigingen niet kunnen voorkomen. Met het vooruitzicht op het leenstelsel, afschaffing OV-kaart, Bindend Studie Advies voor elk studiejaar en fusies van onderwijs instellingen, is er wel degelijk reden genoeg om in verzet te komen. Maar waar blijven we?

Discussion evening: How do we get students to take action? #2 Q&A with Quebecois students about the 2012 student-strike
From 15 to 17 November the Global Uprisings event will be organised in de Balie, at which various guests will talk about: “The Stories, Ideas and Future of Uprisings around the World”. Students from Quebec who will talk about the massive student-strike of 2012 at this event, also want to visit the KSA evening to give a Q&A for the students of Amsterdam!
In 2012 hundreds of thousands of people in Quebec were protesting on the streets against tuition fees. At one point more than 150.000 students were on strike and after the government cracked down on the protests much of the general population backed the students. As a result the regional government collapsed and the new ruling party halted any tuition increase in line with their campaign promise.
Higher education in the Netherlands has been facing austerity for years. Lectures become increasingly massive and the university steadily turns into commercial enterprise that sells degrees. There is however not much of a response from students. There were about 15.000 students on the streets protesting In 2011, but this didn’t stop a new wave of austerity measures from emerging. With the prospect of a loan-system (rather than current student allowances), the scrapping of OV-card, mergers of educational institutions, and other neoliberal reforms, there is plenty of reasons to take the streets again. Why aren’t we?
