We zullen onszelf  organiseren.

English translation

“Number 16, nice to meet you!”, “Number 70, it’s a pleasure! This is what an introduction round with the students of Action Group Titanic, who have occupied the top floor of the Free University of Amsterdam since Wednesday March 12, sounds like. They are actively resisting the 2,8 million euro cuts to their faculty Earth and Life Sciences. What follows is a report of our impressions, a short interview with three of the activists and some pictures of our solidarity action this morning at Utrecht University.

We had no idea what to expect, but it quickly became clear that the occupation was very well prepared, which managed to make the university and faculty boards very nervous. The occupiers, who will all stay anonymous throughout the action, will not leave before their demands are met. Even the security personnel of the university had to admit; “These students are very professional! They aren’t scared and don’t bend for attempts to intimidate them.”

Austerity measures

The students have been active under the banner of this action group since November last year. Their actions were provoked by reorganization plans that were officially announced in February. Forty staff members (teachers, professors and laboratory personnel) will lose their jobs. The activists have condemned the reorganization plans, since they cause too much damage to their education programs and do not provide a sustainable solution for the future of their faculty.

Time for action!

“We know this is only one of the stadia in a longer struggle”, one of the students tells us. “We organized several information evenings and spoke multiple times with council members and teachers who were involved in the reorganization process. None of it worked. Time for action!”

On February 3 Titanic organized a sit-in in the administration wing which had over a hundred students present and informed the board that this would not be their last action. They put their words into action; one month later they barricaded themselves at the top floor of the VU.

On the 15th floor

The students of the legal team, who also arrange the communication with the rest of the building, are working hard in their new action office and communicate through portable phones. Suddenly, a rumour is buzzing everywhere: “We got an anonymous tip about a threat of eviction!” When we arrive at the actual occupation we see a gigantic banner with a drawing of Cookie Monster and the text “Cookie factory!” right next to the logo of the university. The students welcome us enthusiastically and are happy with the solidarity and support of students from another city.

Broad support

The activists were surprised with the unexpected solidarity from various people. The pastor (who ‘owns’ the chapel at the occupied floor) declared to be in support of the students. Teachers even sent a drone with a message of encouragement up to the top floor (see the video below). The ABVAKABO union also supports the action and brought the students hot meals in the evenings. Furthermore, the Technical Service of the university supported the students by lending them a sound system in order to make their mobilization party which took place on Friday night possible.

Solidarity from Utrecht University

For now the students are still going strong. For six days now, they have been locked up in the Kerkzaal. Kritische Studenten Utrecht declared their solidarity with the action and disrupted business as usual at Utrecht University this morning with a banner drop saying “Students, FIGHT BACK! Solidarity the occupation at the VU!” We also handed out flyers with a call to build a student movement to stop austerity measures and defend education for future generations. Read more about his call in our brochure “Europa en het Hoger Onderwijs” and our pamphlet “Build a student movement for Free Education”

#One world, one struggle!”

“For the past three decades our education system been the target of cuts and reforms. It is being sacrificed on the altar of austerity in the church of the economy. The time has come to take a stand and stop the selling of our future. This is a call for a truly free education. A call to students who feel too isolated to act upon their worries and fears, to organize and build a movement. A student movement that will effectively block the cuts and present a program for free education for all.

We are the generation whose future is put in jeopardy by the crisis of capitalism. We cannot rely on others to fight this fight for us. We must do it ourselves. We must act now. We must act together. For our future and for the society our children grow up in. We will organise, self-educate, take to the streets and do whatever it takes for the cause of free education.”
